THE NEW CLASSICAL
WHAT IS THE NEW CLASSICAL?
THE NEW CLASSICAL is a project I undertook in my final year of my BA. It is an investigation into proportion and geometry that began life as a look into Classical Architecture.
It is split into three distinct volumes.
Each of these sections will provide an overview of each of the volumes: their intent, format and content. There will also be a link to a page with a digital version of all the content within them, as well as a link to download the original files yourself.
VOLUME ONE
DIVISION
This volume was originally a spirally unfolding booklet, taking you step by step through geometry and modular proportion.
1
An introduction to the basics of Classical Architecture, such as the module.
2
It aims to provoke thoughts about the usefulness and elegance of modular proportion.
3
Postulating the role of geometry in beauty serves to whet the appetite of the reader to learn how to use geometry themselves.
DIGITAL CONTENT
I have adapted the content of all three volumes to be web friendly so they can be available here on my website.
PDF LINK
This volume has two versions of the original booklet. The first is as it was for print, each page rotating it’s layout by 90 degrees to create a spiralling format. The second is the booklet oriented correctly for reading on screens.
VOLUME TWO
STRUCTURE
This volume teaches the reader how to construct fundamental geometry using only a compass and ruler.
1
An instructive guide on drawing basic geometry by hand, using only a compass and a ruler.
2
Learning how the proportion arises and is constructed serves to codify the geometry in the mind of the reader.
3
Manually creating this geometry by hand will give a physicality and ‘realness’ to the practice that following the same steps digitally does not.
DIGITAL CONTENT
I have adapted the content of all three volumes to be web friendly so they can be available here on my website.

This is the same content available in the digital page on this website, in PDF format for offline viewing.
VOLUME THREE
MANIFESTATION
The summation of my investigation, full of examples of how geometry has been used to design and create.
